Croeso a Chyflwyniadau / Welcome and Introductions

O'r 24 a oedd wedi cofrestru i ddod i'r Hacathon, 7 lwyddodd i ddod ar y dydd, gyda'r prifyrdd i'r gogledd, de a dwyrain o Aberystwyth yn dywyllodrus neu ynghau. Roedd 6 o staff technegol y Llyfrgell ar gael er mwyn helpu allan. Wedi coffi cafwyd cyfle i bawb gyflwyno'u gilydd a bu cyflwyniad sydyn i'r prosiect a'i brif allbwn, y wefan.

7 out of the 24 who had registered for the Hacathon managed to make it on the day, with main roads to the south, north and east of Aberystwyth treacherous or closed. 6 technical staff from the Library were on hand to help out. After coffee there was an opportunity for everybody to introduce themselves and there was a quick overview of the project and its main output, the website.

Syniadau / Ideas

Adolygwyd y syniadau oedd wedi eu cyfrannu cyn y digwyddiad, a bu cyfle i unigolion i ddatgan eu diddordeb mewn syniad arbennig, a gwelwyd bod syniadau a unigolion yn syrthio yn eitha naturiol i 4 grwp gwahanol, a ffurfiwyd grwpiau o ddau i ddatblygu'r syniadau ymhellach ac i gychwyn ar y gwaith. Aeth oriau heibio gyda'r timau yn gweithio'n galed ac yn ymwneud yn ddwys a'r cynnwys.

The ideas that were submitted before the event were reviewed and participants discussed their interest in particular ideas or aspects. Four groups formed which were extremely engaged with the content and worked hard over the next few hours to develop their ideas.

Y timau / The teams

Andrew Hawke & Hywel Jones

Gweithiodd Andrew a Hywel ar y corpws o destun - wedi nodi tra fod erthyglau y cynnwys wedi eu OCR'io i greu testun digidol, doedd iaith pob erthygl heb eu gofnodi, a bod na werth mewn ceisio adnabod iaith erthygl, ac o hynny i astudio'r dosraniad o Gymraeg a Saesneg dros amser yn y teitlau oedd yn cynnwys y ddwy iaith.

Archwilwyd dwy ddull o adnabod iaith, defnyddio meddalwedd i'r pwrpas, a cheisio chwilio am eiriau sy'n gyffredin yn y Gymraeg ond yn annhebygol o ymddangos mewn iaith arall. Un pwynt diddorol i'w nodi yw fod y meddalwedd adnabod iaith wedi adnabod canran o erthyglau fel Swedeg neu Waloon - rydym yn tybio bod camgymeriadau OCR wedi cyflwyno llythrennau acennog a oedd yn unigryw i'r ieithoedd hyn.

Gareth Morlais & Artur Powroźnik

Article sidebar fed via RSS from live query on collection

Gareth and Artur worked on many strands to attempt to extract information for reuse via the APIs. They were interested in hyperlocal content and extracting information on notable individuals for inclusion in other sites. They created an example website that pulled information from live queries on the data into sidebars of information with links to articles on the website.

This entry was very interesting as it challenged the Library's thinking on what would be useful interface for sharing information. We had thought that our open APIs were enough, but the team pointed out that reuse would be much easier by using standard sharing protocols, and the ability to receive an RSS feed of results from any search on the data was coded on the day. This will be incorporated into the website later, allowing the easy syndication and reuse of specific searches to return a particular set of the data in an easily reusable format.

Meic Parry & Rhodri ap Dyfrig

Ygonglgymreig.jpeg

Roedd tîm Meic a Rhodri yn gynhyrchiol iawn syniadau 10-14, yn ymgymryd â chynnwys y papurau newydd yn uniongyrchol mwy na'r timau eraill.

Roedd eu syniad am fapio Llongddrylliadau yn enghraifft dda o sut byddai echdynnu lleoliadau o'r testun yn gallogi datblygiadau cyffrous pellach.

Roeddent yn arbennig o lwyddianus yn darganfod cynnwys cryno ac hawdd i'w echdynnu drwy chwiliadau a fyddai'n wych i'w ail-gyhoeddi mewn tameidiau.

Louis Taylor & Seb Clarke

Louis arrived late, having attended an exam at the university in the morning! He was paired with Sebastian Clarke from the Library to help out. He came with a great idea for extracting the zeitgeist of a day in history by searching across the newspaper titles for that day and picking out the most frequently occuring words. After filtering out the most common words across the whole corpus, you were left with trending topics for that day.

This ambitious idea wasn't totally developed by the end of the day, but they had a working proof-of-concept which impressed the judges.

Cyfraniad o Bell / Contribution from afar

Gwaith Canolfan Bedwyr - wrth glicio ar y darn melyn, ceir lais yn darllen y cynnwys.

Roedd Dewi Bryn Jones o Ganolfan Bedwyr wedi gobeithio mynychu'r hacathon, ond roedd yr eira yn drech arno. Llwyddodd i gyfrannu o bell gyda mynediad i'r APIs i blethu cynnwys y casgliad gyda rhai o dechnolegau iaith y Ganolfan i'w gyfoethogi.

Datblygodd dudlaen a oedd yn caniatau:

Roedd hyn yn enghraifft wych o sut y gellid cyfoethogi'r adnodd gyda technolegau iaith arloesol y Ganolfan.

Gwobrywo / Prizegiving

Y cyfanwyr eu hunain a criw bychan o staff y Llyfrgell a oedd wedi ymwneud a'r prosiect oedd beirniaid y diwrnod. Roedd gan bob beiriniad 6 sticr - 3 i ddynodi'r cynnig gorau a 3 am y syniad gorau, a gwahoddwyd nhw i rannu'r sticeri ymysg y timau fel ag y mynnent i ddynodi eu dewis.

Y tîm buddugol gyda'r cynnig gorau oedd Gareth ac Artur a beirinadwyd mai Louis oedd wedi cael y syniad gorau.

The judging panel comprised the contributors themselves together with a small number of Library staff which had been involved in the project. Each judge had 6 stickers - 3 to indicate the best entry, and 3 for the best idea, and they were invited to share the stickers out amongst the teams as they wished.

The team judged to have the best entry was Gareth and Artur and Louis was awarded for the best idea.

Casgliadau / Conclusion

O ran y Llyfrgell, roeddem yn hynod o hapus gyda'r digwyddiad, er gwaetha ymdrechion y tywydd i'w ddryllio. Yn wir, pe bai 24 o gyfranwyr wedi mynychu, mae'n eitha sicr na fysa'r diwrnod wedi bod yn gymaint o lwyddiant, cymaint oedd y gwaith a'r cynnyrch a gafwyd gan y nifer llai o gyfranwyr a oedd yn bresenol. Os cawn ni ddigwyddiad tebyg eto, teimlwn bod tua 12 yn nifer da.

Dysgwyd bod angen i ni feddwl rhagor am sut mae rhannu'n data, a bod yr ychwanegiad o RSS feed i'r chwiliadau wedi bod yn enghraifft dda o hyn. Yn bennaf oll, gobeithiwn fod y cyfranwyr wedi mwynhau'r diwrnod cymaint a wnaethom ni, ac eu bod wedi cael cymaint o fudd ohono a wnaeth y Llyfrgell, a rydym yn ddiolchgar iawn iddyn nhw.

From the Library's point of view, we were very happy with the outcome of the event, despite the weather conspiring against us. Indeed, given the intensity and productivity of the few who attended, 24 participants would probably have led to a less successful day. If we hold a similar event again, we would probably look to limit the number to about 12.

We learnt that we need to rethink how we offer the data we share, with the addition of the RSS feed to the search results a good example of this. Most of all, we hope that the participants enjoyed the day as much as we did, and that they gained as much from it as we did, we are very grateful for their contribution.
